Lady Panthers finish season with close loss

By BENJAMIN HERROLD The Monroe City Lady Panthers (4-19, 1-6 in CCC) finished their regular season with a 47-43 loss at Wellsville on Feb. 25. The Lady Panthers led 14-12 after the first quarter and were tied 24-24 at halftime. However, Wellsville outscored Monroe City 11-6 in the third quarter, and then held on in the fourth quarter for the 47-43 win. Shelby Spalding had 11 rebounds for Monroe City. In earlier action, the Lady Panthers lost 67-35 at home to Marion County on Feb. 23. Carly Spalding had 5 rebounds and 3 assists for Monroe City. Monroe City also lost 64-33 at Macon on Feb. 19 in the Lady Panthers’ final CCC game of the year. Macon jumped out to an 18-7 lead after the first quarter en route to the win. Carly Spalding scored 10 points to lead Monroe City, and Olivia Crager added 8 points for the Lady Panthers. Carly Spalding was named CCC All-Conference Honorable Mention. Monroe City played this week in the district tournament Monday night with a 73-33 loss to the South Shelby girls.
