Seventeen new members were initiated into the R.L. Hawkins Chapter of the National Honor Society on Nov. 8. The new members are: Emalee Browning, Zach Elsberry, Kelsey Harrison, Ashlyn Hays, Paige Holland, Ashleigh Hutchison, Anling Lin, Danielle Neice, Kaitlin Nickles, Amanda Norvell, Jack Pangborn, Aaron Peters, Bobby Sladek, Miranda Verdier, Hilary Wilson, Shelby Wilson, and Jordan Woodall. They were escorted by the current members of the Society including Chanson Burns, Joe Chinn, Shelby Davis, Alexis Fishback, Allie Foster, Shelby Franklin, CJ Haden, Karen Hancock, Olivia Hays, Christina Lebak, Miranda Minor, Latosha Minter, Rebecca Pfanner, Devon Ritter, Claire Saunders, David Shively, Shelby Spalding, Renee Stone, Emily Tullock, Meghan Walker, Lauren Winking, and Michael Yochum. To be considered for the National Honor Society students must first have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 and be nominated by two teachers. They then must fill out an application that demonstrates how they have shown the following in their high school career: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Finally, a faculty council meets and by a blind process decides if these students meet all of the above criteria. This year the students will participate in such activities as the canned food drive, teacher appreciation week, Senior Citizen Prom, and other projects as they come along.
