Monroe City native, Hannibal business leader Jack Greathouse, dies

Jack E. Greathouse, 88, of Hannibal, died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at his home.
Services were held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel, with the Rev. Helen McFarland officiating. Burial was in Grand View Burial Park with full military rites conducted by Emmette J. Shields, Post 55, The American Legion.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Smith Funeral Home & Chapel, Hannibal. He was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Monroe City to James R. and Ella M. Watts Greathouse. 
He married Rosella Jefferies Greathouse on Dec. 25, 1941, in Monroe City. She died April 28, 1993.
Survivors include one son, Jack K. (Lisa) Greathouse of Hannibal; nine grandchildren, Joni Carter Shepherd, Becky Carter (Lee) Tullock, Timothy (Christie) Carter and Jami Diane Greathouse, all of Hannibal, Sherri D. Welch of St. Louis, Jack Jason (Melissa) Greathouse of Palmyra, SSGT. Ashley N. Greathouse with U.S. Army in Germany, Cammie M. (Jarod) Shinn, of Milton, Ill., and Caitlin H. Greathouse of Hannibal. Also surviving are 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
Preceding in death were his parents; wife; son, James W. Greathouse; daughter, Connie S. Greathouse Welch; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Anne and Frances E. Hulse.
 Mr. Greathouse was president and CEO of Jack’s Harbor Marine Company, which he founded, for 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was a member of Emmette J. Shields Post 55, the American Legion, for more than 60 years, a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and Homeland Security, past president of Missouri Marine Trade Show Association, honored by the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri State Water Patrol for 50 years of service to Missouri State Water Patrol and the boating public.
 He graduated from Monroe City High School and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hannibal. He loved the outdoors and playing cards with his friends.
 Memorials may be made to the Shiloh Christian Children’s Ranch or to the donor’s choice.
Pallbearers were Lee Tullock, Jason Greathouse, Tim Carter, Adam Carter, Jarod Shinn and Kaine Shields.
