Services held for mother, grandmother, community leader Sally Watson

Sarah (Sally) Margaret Quinn Watson, 89, of Monroe City, died Thursday Feb. 25, 2010 at Monroe City Manor Care Center. She was born Aug. 22, 1920 in Indian Creek, the daughter of Nicholas F. and Dulcie Margaret Buckman Quinn.
She attended St. Stephen School in Indian Creek. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City where she was also a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society. She was a member of the United Cerebral Palsy Association and served as president of that organization for five years.
She served as a board member for the Monroe City Nutrition Center and the Hannibal Regional Diagnostic Center.
She was a charter member of Monroe County Senate Bill 40 Board and Learning Opportunities of Monroe City. In 1994, Learning Opportunities honored her for her many years of service. The Sally Watson Service Award was established to recognize an individual in the community who unselfishly served others. Mrs. Watson was in charge of fundraisers for numerous organizations and volunteered many hours of service to various charities and organizations. She drove a school bus and was an aide in the classroom for the Little Red Schoolhouse in Monroe City. She also worked at the Monroe City Bloodmobile for the American Red Cross for many years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, doing volunteer work, playing cards, quilting and making comforters, cooking, baking and gardening. She was famous in the Monroe City area for making popcorn balls for trick-or-treaters at Halloween time.
She was married to Paul Leslie Watson on Aug. 5, 1939 at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Indian Creek. He died on Jan. 13, 1993.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Sue (Wayne Dee) DeWald of Kearney, Mo.; four sons: Donald Lee (Cathy) Watson of Kansas City, Mark Anthony (Lori) Watson of Kansas City, Thomas Dee (Debbie) Watson of Monroe City, and Edward Michael Watson of Monroe City; two daughters-in-law Marcia Bono (the late James Earl) Watson of Monroe City and Karen Sandstedt (the late Joseph Paul) Watson of Brookfield.
She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members including Charles and Betty Tewell and family, Raymond and Bernice Chappel and family and Phyllis (the late Bernard) Bichsel and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two sons: Joseph Paul and James Earl Watson; three brothers: Joseph, Ambrose and Walter Quinn; and one sister, Monica Tipton.
The Daughters of Isabella recited the Rosary and the parish held a scripture service at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City where visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m.
A Con-Celebrated Mass of Christian Burial was said Monday, March 1, 2010 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City with Father Don Antweiler, Father Mike Quinn and Father Pat Pierceall con-celebrating. Deacon Bernard Buckman also assisted with the services. Burial was in the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Monroe City. Active pallbearers were Mrs. Watson’s grandsons: Todd DeWald, Doug DeWald, Paul Watson, Michael Watson, Shawn Watson, Ryan Watson, Kyle Watson, Brad Watson and Chad Watson. Honorary pallbearers were Mrs. Watson’s granddaughters: Leslie Woods, Sara Watson, Angela Watson, Melissa Coello, Amber Watson, Ashley Watson, Lindsey Petrin and also her great grandchildren: Selena, Justina, Seth, Anthony, Tyler, Payton, Mia, Quinn, Jace, Gabrielle, Isabelle, Erin, Leo, Chad, Mikayla, Hersan, Gabriel, Marcio, Hollis, Evan, Ella, Rhett, Blaine, Briggs, Andrew, Alexis, Makenzie and Brendyn; great-great-grandchildren, Dallas and Clayton; in addition to Paul Clark and all other family members whom she loved and cherished.
Memorials have been suggested to Holy Rosary Church, Holy Rosary School, Monroe City Nutrition Center or donor’s choice.
Garner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
