Local man dies in farm-related accident

Funeral services are pending for a retired Monroe City tool and diemaker, husband and father, Paul Gander. Gander was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. Monday by Marion County Coroner Peggy Porter. He and his son, Martin, were working on a tractor when a hoisted tractor fell on him.

Paul Robert Gander, 68, of Monroe City died at 7:06 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, on his family farm in Marion County, Mo.
He was born Feb. 4, 1941, in Marion County, the son of Clifford Robert and Alice Josephine Jarboe Gander.
He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City. He graduated from Holy Rosary High School with the Class of 1959, and also attended college at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He served his country in the United States Army. He worked for Diemakers Inc./Intermet of Monroe City as a senior process analyst for more than 40 years before retiring in 2006. Mr. Gander was a member of the Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus. He was also a past Jaycees member. He was an avid arrowhead relic collector and loved fishing, hunting and attending local sporting events.
He was married to Cordelia Anne Yates, Dec. 27, 1969, at the St. Stephen Church, Indian Creek. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother, Alice Josephine Gander, Monroe City; two sons: Aaron (Stacy) Gander, Hannibal and Martin Gander, Monroe City; four daughters: Yvonne (Tom) Miller, Houston, Texas, Renee (Travis) Shinn, Monroe City, Mona (Prentess) Clifton Prentess, Columbia, and Amelia (Andy) Gerke, St. Louis, Mo.; one brother, Don (Liz) Gander, Palmyra; two sisters, Hope (Joe) Goodwin, Afghanistan, and Alice (the late Joel) Gander, Greer, S.C.; seven grandchildren: Trey Gander, Paige Shinn, Cole Gander, Whitney Shinn, Lilly Gander, Akiva Clifton and Austin Shinn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother-in-law, Joel Dobson.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Monroe City. Burial will be at the St. Stephen Cemetery, Indian Creek. Fr. Don Antweiler will say the funeral Mass.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, evening with a rosary being recited at 3:45 p.m. by the Daughters of Isabella and a Parish Scripture will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Garner Funeral Home, Monroe City.
Active pallbearers will be Don Gander, Tom Miller, Travis Shoinn, Prentess Clifton, Andy Gerke, Mike Gander and Kristopher Gander. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Mr. Gander’s grandchildren. Memorials have been suggested to Holy Rosary School, Holy Rosary Church or the American Heart Association, Garner Funeral Home and Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
