90 Years Ago Feb. 6, 1920 T.J. Christian purchased the building that had been occupied by the Monroe City Laundry until it was heavily damaged by fire. French Memorial certificates were to be awarded on Washington’s Birthday on behalf of the French Government to the following fathers and mothers in Monroe City and community whose sons were killed in action in World War I: Henry W. McCann, Irving P. Hickman, Mrs. Minnie Rouse, Floyd A. Brownell and Mrs. Cecelia Shuck. Major John L. Owen, Chapter, United Daughters of Confederacy, observed the fourteenth anniversary of the founding of the chapter in the home of Mrs. D.R. Campbell. Those who had served as president since organization were: Mrs. Nettie Proctor, Mrs. M.B. Proctor, Mrs. T.W. Boulware, Mrs. Susan McFarland Brown, Mrs. Anna Lee, Mrs. J.N. Southern, Mrs. C.A. McClintic. Mrs. J.J. Brown, Mrs. Laura Boulware, Mrs. D.R. Davenport, Mrs. M.C. Hawkins and Mrs. R.S. McClintic, the last named serving in 1920. The Henderson Produce Co. was planning extensive improvements and an enlargement of their plant here. The costs were estimated at $22,000. C.I. Hoy, former pastor of the Monroe City Methodist Church, had given up the ministry to enter legal work with a firm in Dallas, Texas. He had passed the bar examinations a short time previously. 80 Years Ago Feb. 6, 1930 The Henderson Produce Co. planned a $20,000 enlargement program at its plant in Laclede which would double the cold storage capacity. A daughter named Pauletta was born Dec. 4 to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jones. A son, Albert Lee, was born Jan. 30 to Mr. and Mrs. Adelbert Ely. Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Montgomery observed their 55th anniversary of their wedding on Feb. 3 with a family dinner. Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Hayden, whose 45th wedding anniversary was also Feb. 3, were among the guests. Mr. and Mrs. John Maiden were parents of a son born Jan. 31. A daughter was born Feb. 2 to Mr. and Mrs. B.C. Baxter of Woodward, Okla. Mrs. Baxter was the former Virginia Nash, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Nash. Robert M. Glenn, car inspector for the Wabash Railroad Co. at Hannibal, and born and reared in the Warren community, died of injuries received when he was run over by a Wabash train near Oakwood. Mr. and Mrs. Clay H. Hays were surprised by their children in honor of their 32nd wedding anniversary. The group included Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Hagan and daughter; Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hays and daughters; Mr. and Mrs. Glennon Spalding and children and Frances and Matthew Hays. Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Kelly observed their 52nd anniversary of their wedding on Feb. 1 at their home five miles northwest of Stoutsville. 70 Years Ago Feb. 8, 1940 Five generations of the family of Mrs. Ella Livingston were united with her in her home in Monroe City. With Mrs. Livingston they included her son, Charles M. Livingston, 65; Mrs. L.H. Sandifer, 43, a granddaughter, Mrs. Frances Kissebach, 20, great-granddaughter and Frances Marian Kissebach, 3, great-great granddaughter. Roy B. Meriwether, J.V. Proctor and R.L. Hawkins were elected directors of the Home Building and Loan Association for a term of three years each. Frank Going, son of Mrs. Orville Wilson arrived in Monroe City on a month’s leave from the U.S. Navy. He had spent five years with the fleet between Manila, the Philippine Islands and China. A son was born Feb. 3 to Mr. and Mrs. Roy Owen. All city employees were given a pay increase of $5 per month by the board of aldermen at its February meeting. The six sons of Mrs. William J. Dean served as pallbearers at her funeral. They included Lloyd, Floyd, Turner, Tyrell, Jack and Duke Dean. Announcement was made of the engagement and approaching wedding on March 16 in St. Louis of Miss Ada Mary Feaster and Dr. Paul F. Max. The prospective bride was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Feaster and was a graduate of Monroe City High School. 60 Years Ago Feb. 9, 1950 The Monroe City High School girls basketball team won their third straight tournament championship when they defeated Palmyra girls in the Palmyra tournament Feb. 5. Members of the team were: Joan Freidank, Marjorie Smith, Kathleen Glascock, Rheyma Burditt, Charlotte Burditt, Janann Roland, Martine Shulse, Marilyn Frankenbach, Elizabeth Chatfield, Norma Stone, Anna Marie Dusenberry and Margaret Tipton. C.L. Gottman was coach. Paul Cooke was discharged from the Unites States Marine Corps after serving three and one-half years. Mrs. W.E. McCulloch of near Ely observed her 90th birthday Jan. 31. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Smith of near Hunnewell were parents of a son, Ronald Glen, born Feb. 6. Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Graaff of Ellensburg, Wash., were parents of a son born Feb. 6. A son, James Patrick, was born Feb. 1 to Mr. and Mrs. David Spalding. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bridwell of Columbia were parents of a son born Feb. 1. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Painter and children, Dickie and Valvary Jean, moved to their new home at 827 North Main Street. Carl Edgar, day-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Thomas, died Feb. 2 in St. Elizabeth Hospital. Monroe City’s contribution to the Polio Drive amounted to $881.74. The wedding of Miss Joyce Kindred of Louisiana and Gregory Buckman was to take place Feb. 11 in St. Stephen Catholic Church at Indian Creek. 50 Years Ago Feb. 4, 1960 The Quincy Speaker Manufacturing Co. of Quincy, Ill., arranged a 10 year lease with Emmett Robey for a new building he had erected on the Burlington right-of-way west of the depot. They manufacture radio and TV speakers, AM and FM tuners, wiring harnesses for washing machines, dryers and electric organs, also plating for various government projects. Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Buckman of Indian Creek vicinity observed their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, Jan. 11. Receipts from the municipally owned electric power and water systems in Monroe City for the last six months of 1959 were $165,444.34. Frank Mayer of Monroe City had been notified that he was one of the top 25 district sales managers in the entire Moorman Mfg. Co. sales force for the year of 1959. Cadet Mark A. Swearengen had earned a promotion at Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington, Mo. He has been advanced from the rank of Cadet Warrant officer to cadet second lieutenant by Lieutenant Col. H.E. Link, professor of military science for displaying superior leadership qualities, executing orders in a commendable manner, and accepting major responsibilities. Mrs. W.B. VanMarter, 81, lifetime resident of Monroe City passed away Jan. 30 at the family home. Nineteen students in Monroe City R-I High School became members of the R.L. Hawkins National Honor Society. They were: Rebecca Booing, Marceille Smith, Connie Nesbit, Peggy Sue Trussell, Betty Sparks, Charlotte Watts, Norma Jean Lillard, Vickie Gottman, Sherry Kendrick, Wilma Lou Meyers, Glenda See, Betty Fields, Carl Robertson, Kenneth Barnes, Kerry Ratliff, Loren Bode, Linda Sparks, Bertha Feldkamp and Joan O’Neal. 40 Years Ago Jan. 29, 1970 Deborah K. Williams was named Monroe City R-I Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Paul Williams. Charley Welker was accepted as a new member of the Monroe City Jaycees. Twenty four members were present for a rabbit supper at the VFW Hall. The organization was selling pecans which were available at Dean’s Barber Shop, Burdman’s, Spalding Pharmacy, Underhill’s Tavern and Buckman Superette. Over 80 Legionnaires, wives and special guests attended the dinner meeting of the Edgar McCann Post of the American Legion. Mrs. Helen Cornelius entertained after the dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schnetzer were honored for their 50th wedding anniversary Jan. 25. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Grubb of Lakenan were to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary Feb. 10. 30 Years Ago Jan. 31, 1980 The Carter administration gave its support to continued construction of the Cannon Dam. The President’s fiscal year 1981 budget contained $14.6 million for construction and $1,306,000 for project operation and maintenance. The Monroe City Pantherettes basketball team won first place in the Palmyra Tournament. They defeated Palmyra 72-59. Holy Rosary School students and teachers were to celebrate Catholic Schools Week Feb. 3-9 with special activities during the week. Births: a son, Matthew Travis, Jan. 28 to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Phears of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Justin Dane, Jan. 22 to Mr. and Mrs. Roger Rhoades; a daughter, Christina Marie, Jan. 22 to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Benson; a son, Terrance Bradley, Jan. 22 to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Ritter. Doug Waymack leased the White Mule 66 Gas and Service Station located at the junction of Highways 24-36. The station was to be known as Waymack’s 66. 20 Years Ago Feb. 1, 1990 Verle R. Hugenot was named CEO of UMB in Paris and Monroe City effective Feb. 5. Candidates filing for the city offices included: Mayor, Steve Buckman; City Marshall, incumbent Paul Clark, challengers, Ronald Blue, William Thorndyke, and Marlin Reagan; Tax Collector, Christine Buckman; Municipal Judge, Jerry Botkins; Ward I, Jeff Botkins and Pat Turnbull, Jr.; Ward II, Cliff Talton, Jr. and Glen Porter; Ward III, Tracey Addison, Lennie Wood and Kent Cheek. Mr. and Mrs. Greg Buckman were to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary Feb. 10. 10 Years Ago Feb. 1, 2000 Taken from the files of The Lake Gazette Dennis Summers was found guilty of murder and burglary of a Centralia nursing home administrator in the Boone County court. Births: a daughter, Natalie Elizabeth, Jan. 26 to Joe and Lisa Spalding of Ashland; a son, Gavin Payt, Jan. 27 to Curt and Kara Lehenbauer. Catholic Schools Week was celebrated at Holy Rosary School with special activities all week long. VIP Day honored Very Important People including Tammy Wilson, Fr. Bill Flanagan, Judy Hagan, Melanie Albus, Martha Kendrick, Lynette Williams, Rusty Adam and Charlotte Thompson.
