Police department advises residents to lock car doors

Officers of the Monroe City Police Department are urging residents to take reasonable measures to reduce crime in their community.
Monroe City Police Chief Rick Stone said that over the past three weeks officers have taken reports of several thefts from vehicles throughout the community.
Nearly all of the thefts were from vehicles which were left unlocked. Compounding the problem is the fact that much of the items in the unsecured vehicles are not permanently attached as in the case with GPS devices and computers.
. Generally many of the items taken from the vehicles are difficult to track as most residents do not have serial numbers or any other information to prove ownership. Simple steps such as removing valuables and locking the vehicles would prevent many of the thefts.
