The Moberly Monitor Index reported that On Saturday, May 9 at about 10:20 a.m., Moberly Police were dispatched to a residence in the 1300 block of Quinn and the 400 block of E. Logan to check the well being of two children, ages 6 and 2, who were in the care of the caller’s estranged husband.
The caller indicated her husband, a 39-year-old Moberly man, was threatening to harm the children.
According to a report from MPD commander Kevin Palmatory, offi cers responded and were unable to locate the man or the children. At approximately 11:45 a.m., offi - cers located the husband’s vehicle and conducted a traffi c stop near the intersection of Emerson and Quinn. Shortly after being stopped, the man fl ed in the vehicle with the children inside.
Offi cers pursued the vehicle to US 24 to Bus 63 where it turned north. As the vehicle continued northbound and left the city limits, Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers took over the pursuit, assisted by Randolph County Sheriff’s deputies. During the pursuit, which lasted approximately one hour, the vehicle entered Monroe County where Monroe County deputies assisted, and came back into Randolph County.
During the pursuit in rural Randolph and Monroe counties, the MSHP had a total of fi ve troopers and the Troop B fi xed wing aircraft involved at different times. Offi cers twice attempted to deploy spike strips in Monroe County, but the suspect was able to avoid the strips.
The pursuit continued back to Moberly where the vehicle fi nally stopped in the 1300 block of E. Logan. When offi cers approached the vehicle, they observed the suspect to begin spraying and ingesting some type of aerosol inside the vehicle. Offi cers then broke the driver’s window to control the driver and remove the children.
The substance the suspect had sprayed was some type of insect poison and one Moberly offi cer was sprayed with the substance, and one Moberly offi cer and one Randolph County deputy received cuts from the broken glass while controlling the suspect. The children, the two offi cers and the suspect were treated at the scene by Randolph County Ambulance District paramedics and then transported to MRMC. The children, who received only very minor injuries, were placed into protective custody and turned over to the Randolph County Juvenile Offi cer.
